Sara Woodward of STAIR

Sara Woodard is Executive Director of STAIR, an acronym for Start The Adventure In Reading. With over 350 local volunteers, STAIR in New Orleans teaches first, second, and third grade children to read. As they help children learn to read, STAIR volunteers give the children positive role models to look up to and learn from. The reading mentors show the children that people care about them and want to help them grow and develop. STAIR has a lasting influence on the young children it serves; often, students in the STAIR program return later on to be tutors themselves. If you would like to volunteer, contact STAIR at their website or at (504) 899-0820. Listen to the interview here!

Julie Lea Discusses the Krewe of Nyx

Julie Lea is co-founder of the Mystic Krewe of Nyx, New Orleans' newest all-female Mardi Gras organization. Julie explains why an all-women Krewe is so special for the ladies who are members. According to Julie, "There are 10 to 60 ladies per float." As locals and visitors alike know, Mardi Gras throws are a key part of every Mardi Gras parade. For its inaugural appearance, the Krewe of Nyx will feature hand-painted and lighted throws, plus a special surprise throw that Julie is keeping top-secret. The 2012 Krewe of Nyx parade will make its debut in Uptown New Orleans on Wednesday, February 15 at 7pm behind the Druids parade. Listen here!

About This Blog

Craig Kraemer grew up on Lowerline Street across from the Carrollton Cemetery and watched countless Jazz Funerals wind their way into the cemetery long before Jazz Funerals became cool. He remembers Hurricane Betsy and Mayor Vic Schiro’s famous quote to panicked citizens: “...don’t believe any false rumors unless they come from me...”

He lives now in Faubourg Saint John. (He calls them "faubourgs," not "neighborhoods" - he is proud of our city’s French heritage.) Although they were German, the Kraemers adopted Cajun culture and traditions. (His mother's family came straight from Paris.)

Kraemer's day job is as a freelance graphic designer, which he has been doing since age 20. Following Hurricane Katrina, he began a new business filming such things as the New Orleans Opera productions and symposiums for the Historic New Orleans Collection. He later started New Orleans PodCasting as a community service four months after Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans was in dire need of positive stories after the devastation of the storm. The national media were taking care of the negative stories. Those who had stayed, who were still in the city, or who had just returned were eager to talk about the good things that were happening, however small they were.
